David Cameron claims that alcohol, drug addicts and overweight people have no rights on benefits

David Cameron claims that alcohol, drug addicts and overweight people have no rights on benefits

Short summary:

David Cameron made a lot of people angry by saying that drunks, drug addicts and the overweight don't deserve to get any benefits. He also said that he doesn't pay taxes to keep a place open for them in the welfare system, but professor David Nutt, specialized in drugs hit back. He said that addiction is not something that people choose themselves. He said that if they need benefit, they should not be denied it as well. This comment followed after the Department for Work and Pension showed 12,800 alcoholics, 9,200 drug addicts and 600 overweight people that have claimed  incapacity benefit over a decade.

Comment:
I agree and disagree with David Cameron. I think it is a bit harsh to exclude people who struggle with overweight and addictions. On the other side, I think there is definitely a choice to choose for drugs and food, and therefore I agree with David that people are causing trouble to their own health, while they actually could be healthy people. Even with this I feel quite mean, since I think that these people deserve as much as other people. It is hard for me to decide at who's side I am, because my feelings towards this matter are double-sided.

  1. I agree with Cameron. People choose to have a drug addiction and they also choose to have overweight. These are not valid reasons to receive benefits. Maybe not receiving benefits can enourage them to work. However if they do not receive benefits, and people do not want to hire them because they are drug addicts, they have no money.

  2. I do not agree with Cameron. Addiction is not something you choose for on a monday morning 'hey let's start a heroin addiction today because I'm bored!' Besides, there are a lot of overweight people, drug addicts and alcholics who are functioning like normal adults. But may they get fired, they won't get a job because they are overweight/drug addicts/alchohics.

I think it is wrong to judge people on things like these. But I also do not agree on the welfare system and the benefits.
If you want food, you have to work for it.
Everybody is capable of doing small light chores, and even community service for just a few hours a week will give te people who receive benefits a sense of belonging and will at the same time help the community.
